HOLMEN PAPER MADRID is one of the four mills of the Holmen Paper company – a business owned by the Swedish Holmen Group. It manufactures 100% recycled newsprint and lightweight-coated magazine paper with a total annual capacity of 470,000 tons. The use of water has become a priority on its goals in order to keep being one of the mills with the lowest levels of water consumption per ton of paper produced in the world as well as for studying the possibilities of using reclaimed water on its processes.

Holmen Paper Madrid is an environmentally friendly mill :

• working in the frame of an environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001 standards. It has become the first industrial plant in Madrid to obtain the European IPPC permit.
• working beside the state water supplier in Madrid , to investigate the possibilities of using reclaimed water in Holmen Paper Madrid processes. The water used in Holmen Paper Madrid is recycled around thirteen times, which is significant for a company of this size. Water is treated in the factory by flotation and through biological processing prior to being sent to the public treatment plant. An ultra-filtration plant has been introduced to further reduce the consumption of water in the factory.
• working to give “ a new lease of life for waste paper”, since the raw material used in the mill is 100% recovered paper .
• working to recycle the 100% of the sludge produced during the process in the ceramic industries and in the production of compost.

Research and development is a commitment for Holmen Paper Madrid. The mill counts with the best available techniques and with an advanced water-pulp-and-paper laboratory at 50% with Complutense University of Madrid. Various agreements with authorities in Spain as well as national and international institutions make Holmen Paper Madrid an active partner of different ongoing projects.
